True story: I was just at Egilsstaðir’s geothermal swimming pool. I was in the locker room, changing clothes with a bunch of young boys who were telling another boy, “You don’t care about your birthday, do you?” (Why these Icelandic boys were speaking English, I don’t know.) After the boy agreed, “No, I don’t care about my birthday,” I said, “Hey, it’s my birthday. I like it!” The birthday boy asked me my name. After I replied, “Michael,” they all sang “Happy Birthday” in Icelandic to me. The two chaperones looked at me, nodded, and smiled.
AND just a reminder to family, friends, and colleagues: today is my birthday. And I know the perfect gift you can get me. As with last year, I want to spread snazziness on my b-day. So, I’m asking you to help me out and express gratitude to someone. Tell them why they are special to you, a fun memory you have of them, something they once did that really helped you out, or whatever else you think your target of gratitude should hear.
